After graduating from the MFA program in Production at USC in 1968, Bailey, who grew up in Southern California, built a celebrated career as a cinematographer, with more than 80 credits. He is best known for his multiple collaborations with directors Paul Schrader: American Gigolo (1980), Cat People (1982), Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985), Light of Day (1987) and Forever Mine (1999); Lawrence Kasdan: The Big Chill (1983), Silverado (1985); The Accidental Tourist (1988) and Wyatt Earp (1994); and Ken Kwapis: Vibes (1988), The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005), License to Wed (2007), He’s Just Not That Into You (2009), Big Miracle (2012) and A Walk in the Woods (2015). His credits also include Ordinary People (1980), Groundhog Day (1993), In the Line of Fire (1993), The Kid Stays in the Picture (2002), Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (2002), How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), and many other well-known hits.

Bailey also served as President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) from 2017 to 2019, the first from the Cinematography Branch. He won a lifetime achievement award from the American Society of Cinematographers in 2015. His credits as a director include Lily Tomlin’s The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe (1991). He is survived by his wife, film editor Carol Littleton (E.T. the Extra Terrestrial), to whom he was married for 51 years. They also worked together, collaborating on more than a dozen features.

Jeff Burr was known for directing a spate of horror films, including Whisper to a Scream (1987), starring Vincent Price, Stepfather II: Make Room for Daddy (1989), Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990), Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings (1993), Puppet Master 4 (1993), Puppet Master 5 (1994), and Night of the Scarecrow (1995). His other credits include Eddie Presley (1992), about an Elvis impersonator, which featured Quentin Tarantino and Bruce Campbell, Spoiler (1998), a sci-fi prison escape story, and The Boy with the X-Ray Eyes (1999), a children’s sci-fi comedy adventure. He co-wrote and directed the World War II drama Straight Into Darkness. Burr lived in Dalton, Georgia, his hometown.

Richard “Dick” Harber spent 40 years at USC, first as a student on the G.I. Bill in 1950, then as a longtime professor. He steered the group of USC Cinema graduates that came to be known as the “film school generation” through 480 Film Editing—Harber’s specialty. Harber was the editor on The Face of Lincoln, the 1955 short documentary on the lecture in which Robert Merrell Gage simultaneously sculpts Lincoln’s features and tells the President’s life story. The film won the School of Cinematic Arts an Academy Award for Best Short Subject. Harber, who retired in 1990, is survived by three children, four grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.

Habib, a former banker, made a career switch and graduated from the MFA program in Production in 2018 where he was on the Advanced Directing team for the USC Originals film Samir. A Canadian citizen, Habib was an alumnus of the 2021 Norman Jewison Film Program Writers Lab at the Canadian Film Centre in Toronto, where he resided. At the time of his passing, he was finishing post-production on Fat Lady Sriracha, his first feature as writer/director.

An actor since age 3, Austin was known for his role as young Theo Sipowicz, son of lead character Andy Sipowicz, on the hit television series NYPD Blue, from 1999 to 2004. He received a Young Artist Award for his work on the series. Among other numerous film and television credits were Treasure Planet, Brother Bear, Elf, Threshold, How I Met Your Mother, American Dad and According to Jim. Austin was also a musician, who performed under the name Pope! A native of Ridgecrest, CA, he was salutatorian of his high school, and graduated with a BFA from the Film & Television Production Division in 2017. He is survived by his mother, Karrie Raglin, sister, Kali Raglin, and grandparents, Billie and Shirley Raglin.

Producer SCA Professor and Chair,
Peter Stark Producing Program

Considered an industry legend, Turman’s career spanned fifty years that included classics like The Graduate (1967), for which he received an Oscar nomination, The Great White Hope (1970), The Thing (1982), and American History X (1998). He joined the School of Cinematic Arts as Chair of the Peter Stark Producing Program, which he ran from 1991 until he retired in 2021, turning the program into a boot camp for creative producing. His book, So You Want to Be a Producer (2001), has become a guide to succeeding in the job. Turman is survived by his sons John, Andrew, and Peter, four grandchildren, and two nieces, Katherine and Suzanna.
